8" brim is made from 4 layers of tantalizing teal sinamay
straw, edged in romantic ruffled horsehair (don’t worry
… it’s synthetic) and vintage black patent straw braid.
Complementing beaded trim in teal, red & black flows freely,
nearly invisibly, atop the brim’s edge
.“Mrs. Teal’s” matching teal crown is wrapped
with a deep cherry red sinamay band that sets the hat “aglow.”
This Kentucky Derby chapeau is lavishly adorned with teal and
black stripped coque feathers, red miniature duck feathers and
large black horsehair(not to worry ... it's synthetic) bow.
Go ahead...
dare yourself … then prepare yourself for signing autographs!

"NINTH YEAR
STRETCH"
The Kentucky Derby Museum chooses Gena Conti Millinery
for prestigious 9th annual (2009-2010) Derby Hat Exhibit
The Kentucky Derby Museum
Annual Hat Exhibit highlights one of the Derby’s most glamorous
traditions, the exquisite hats worn on race day. Hat entries of
all types from designers around the world, including either men
or ladies styles, are submitted for competition each May.
This year, the Museum’s
distinguished panel of judges, once again, selected the “best
20 - 30 hats that most represented the spirit of the Kentucky
Derby.” The winning hats are now on display in the exhibit
“Derby Hats” that runs through the end of June 2010.
The museum receives over 200,000 visitors annually.
“... We're delighted
to be chosen once again this year … our seventh consecutive
year entering the competition,” reports Gena Conti. The
Kentucky Derby is one of the USA’s millinery highlights
of the year. With the record-breaking increase of both worldwide
hat sales and the growth of working milliners, the competition
gets tougher each season.
For the last six, now seven years, I've thought we will never
make the time limit for entry into the competition."
"We were tremendously
busy the entire spring season with custom clients’ orders
for traditional Hat Events including Parks and Conservancy luncheons,
The Belle Isle Women’s Committee Hat Luncheon (here in Detroit)
and Race Season in general (Dubai, Ascot, Preakness, Belmont Stakes)
where fabulous hat wearing is simply a must… In the final
days approaching the Derby, we were shipping many hats, overnight
to clients in their Louisville Hotels!"
Nothing else matters
but creating THE hat when it’s a Run for the Roses….
A Run for the FINISH LINE - A Run for the "Purse"
(sure to match your Gena Conti Custom Hat)
With tensions mounting
and deadlines looming over the workrooms, "We were just
able to make the finish (dead)-line with our entry, “MRS
TEAL,” for the Derby Museum’s contest --- Being notified
this week of our winning place in the exhibit was, even after
7 years, exceptionally thrilling!”
